How we choose

Fewer resorts, known completely.

Which luxury Maldives resort is right for me?

No one luxury Maldives resort is right for everyone. Velaa Private Island if you want total seclusion, Soneva Jani if you want barefoot and sculptural, Waldorf Astoria Ithaafushi if you want three islands and a yacht instead of a seaplane, JOALI Maldives if art matters. Say what you want from the island and we will narrow it to three.

Known, not listed

Twenty-one resorts, known completely

We would rather know 21 resorts completely than list a hundred we have not seen. We know which house reefs swim as well as they photograph, we are not paid more to recommend one resort over another, and when a resort is wrong for you, we say so.

Speedboat or seaplane

Your atoll sets the tone of the trip

North and South Malé Atoll are a boat ride from Malé, 20 to 45 minutes, at any time of day; Raa, Baa, Noonu and Dhaalu need a 35 to 45 minute seaplane, in daylight only. Neither is better. One buys convenience, the other seclusion.

Three, not twenty-one

Three recommendations, never a list of twenty

Twenty-one is the full list, not the shortlist. Tell us who is travelling and how you want it to feel, and your specialist comes back with three resorts, each with a clear reason and exactly where the differences lie.

Atoll by atoll

Dhaalu Atoll

45 min seaplane

Good to know

Questions about luxury Maldives resorts.

If yours is not here, ask your specialist. Replies within a few hours.

01 How much do luxury Maldives resorts cost per night?

No single figure covers 21 resorts, and a published rate is only the start. JOALI Maldives, for example, publishes from US$2,376 a night for the villa alone (checked November 2026); a 10% service charge, 17% TGST, a Green Tax of US$12 per person per night and the seaplane come on top. We quote the whole price, itemised, at lower rates than booking direct or through a booking site, confirmed for your exact dates.

02 What separates a 5-star from an ultra-luxury resort?

Nothing official separates a 5-star hotel from an ultra-luxury resort. A star rating describes facilities; it does not say which way a villa faces or how the house reef swims. We judge the resorts here on specifics: whether every villa has its own pool, the length of the transfer and whether the island suits young children. Those are the differences we set out when we recommend three.

03 Which resorts have private pool villas?

Two we can state as of November 2026: JOALI Maldives, where each of the 73 villas and residences has a private pool, and Kuredhivaru, becoming Mondrian Maldives, with 105 villas, all with a private pool: 30 on the beach, 72 over the water and the rest three-bedroom residences. For the other 19 we confirm pool villas category by category.

04 Seaplane or speedboat: which transfer is better in the Maldives?

Neither is better. A speedboat serves the resorts near Malé, 20 to 45 minutes away, at any time of day, so it suits late arrivals and short trips. A seaplane reaches the further atolls in 35 to 45 minutes, in daylight only, so arrival timing matters. One buys convenience, the other seclusion. We plan around either.

05 Which Maldives atoll should I choose?

Start with how you want to arrive. North and South Malé Atoll mean a 20 to 45 minute boat ride at any time of day. Raa, Baa, Noonu and Dhaalu mean a 35 to 45 minute seaplane in daylight and more distance from the capital. Baa adds manta season at Hanifaru Bay, May to November. We narrow it to three.

06 How do I choose between two Maldives resorts that both look perfect?

Ask what the photographs leave out: which way the villas face, how long the transfer is, how the house reef swims, whether the island suits young children. These details separate resorts that look alike. Tell your specialist who is travelling and how you want it to feel, and we will set out exactly where the differences lie.
